The ultimate success of the SEA Games in Laos reinforced the power of sport to consolidate nationalism, despite the paradox in Laos of nationalism emerging from a complex mix of autonomy and dependence. Of particular concern was the fact that, despite significantly reducing the size of the Games, Laos – one of the smallest and poorest countries in Southeast Asia – depended greatly on foreign help to conduct them, especially from China.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an in-depth understanding of some of the ways in which one elite soccer coach has constructed, and continues to construct, his professional knowledge. Much of the qualitative work which does exist in this field focuses on younger male soccer fans and pathologises, the experience of female spectators. Drawing on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with female rugby union fans from Leicester, we explore these women’s fan experiences in the context of claims about the recent ‘feminisation’ of the late-modern sports crowd. Instead, in this paper we explore the experiences of mainstream female fans from a sport which is much under-researched, English rugby union. The analysis demonstrates that sport must be analyzed within its socio-historical context to decide whether or not it is ritual! Second, Steve’s story is presented, drawing upon excerpts from field-notes, interview transcripts and our critical reflection upon them in the context of existing literature.
Acknowledging that it is, in the end, just one version of Steve’s story that we have been able to understand, the final section of the paper reflects upon both the life-story process and the issues that Steve’s story raises for coach education. By adopting a life-story approach the paper problematises the predominant rationality of much existing coaching research and questions the role of coach education programmes in the development of coaching knowledge.
