Computer scientists have created an ‘intelligent’ shoe that helps blind and visually-impaired people avoid multiple obstacles

Computer scientists have created an ‘intelligent’ shoe that helps blind and men’s brand leather shoes visually-impaired people avoid multiple obstacles.  

The £2,700 (€3,200) product, called InnoMake, has been developed by Austrian company Tec-Innovation, southwest office shoes. backed by Graz University of Technology (TU Graz). 

The product consists of waterproof ultrasonic sensors attached to the tip of each shoe, which vibrate and make noises near obstacles. 

The closer the wearer gets to an obstacle, the faster the vibration becomes, much like a parking sensor on the back of a vehicle.   

Tec-Innovation is now working on embedding an AI-powered camera as part of a new iteration of the product. 

The shoe as it is now already available on the market. The ultrasonic sensor is attached to the toe of the shoe. In the future, a camera plus a processor running the algorithm will be integrated there

‘Ultrasonic sensors on the toe of the shoe detect obstacles up to four meters [13 feet] away,’ said Markus Raffer, a founder of Tec-Innovation and himself visually impaired. 

‘The wearer is then warned by vibration and/or acoustic signals. This works very well and is already a great help to me personally.’ 

The product price includes one device per foot, along with one pair of shoes (or installation on an exiting pair of shoes), as well as a USB charger.

Man is killed by drunk driver after leaving AA meeting

A man who was leaving an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and had been sober for years was struck and killed by a drunk driver.

According to Modesto police, Ray Galindo, 58, was sitting on the tailgate of his truck in the parking lot outside of Living Sober Fellowship, talking to a new member of the group on April 23, when 22-year-old Braxton Howze allegedly swerved off the road and struck him.

As he lay on the ground, one of his fellow meeting attendees ‘held his hand’ to show their respect, Galindo’s friend, Dee Gisler told the <a style="font-weight: bold;" class="class" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" website Bee.

He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police said Howze was driving on a suspended license from a previous DUI charge at the time and allegedly walked away from the scene but was caught nearby. 

He is now being held on a $1 million bond, and faces several charges, including hit and run, driving under the influence, hit and run with injury, gross vehicular manslaughter and driving on a suspended license.

He is due back in court on May 11.

She said he has struggled with sobriety over the years, but would always go back to AA. He made  amends with her and their sons, Ray Galindo Jr. and Thomas Galindo, before his death, she said.

Inside, they found newspapers, tinned food, straw beds, clothes and lanterns and the remains of animals eaten by the men who were once based within it.  

Now, the refuge has been fully excavated and the relics it once held are to go on display in a new museum which is set to open in the Lombardy town of Bormio in 2022, according to <a style="font-weight: bold;" class="class" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" website Guardian.

Historian Stefano Morisini, who coordinates heritage projects at Stelvio national park, told the newspaper: ‘The barracks is a time capsule of the White War that helps us to understand the extreme, starving conditions that the soldiers experienced.

‘The knowledge we’re able to gather today from the relics is a positive consequence of the negative fact of climate change.’

Marco Ghizzoni, who works at the White War museum in Lombardy, said a corpse is found ‘every two or three years’, usually in areas where there was fighting.
