Your most sensitive data is likely exposed online. These people try to find it

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> CNET Justin Paine sits in a pub in Oakland, California, searching the internet for your most sensitive data. It doesn’t take him long to find a promising lead.

On his laptop, he opens Shodan, a searchable index of cloud servers and other internet-connected devices. Then he types the keyword “Kibana,” which reveals more than 15,000 databases stored online. Paine starts digging through the results, a plate of chicken tenders and fries growing cold next to him.

“This one’s from Russia. This one’s from China,” Paine said. “This one is just wide open.”

From there, Paine can sift through each database and check its contents. One database appears to have information about hotel room service. If he keeps looking deeper, he might find credit card or passport numbers. That isn’t far-fetched. In the past, he’s found databases containing patient information from drug addiction treatment centers, as well as library borrowing records and online gambling transactions.

Paine is part of an informal army of web researchers who indulge an obscure passion: scouring the internet for unsecured databases. The databases — unencrypted and in plain sight — can contain all sorts of sensitive information, including names, addresses, telephone numbers, bank details, Social Security numbers and medical diagnoses. In the wrong hands, the data could be exploited for fraud, identity theft or blackmail.

The data-hunting community is both eclectic and global. Some of its members are professional security experts, others are hobbyists. Some are advanced programmers, others can’t write a line of code. They’re in Ukraine, Israel, Australia, the US and just about any country you name. They share a common purpose: spurring database owners to lock down your info.

Anybody in the world can find this data. Bob Diachenko, database hunter The pursuit of unsecured data is a sign of the times. Any organization — a private company, a nonprofit or a government agency — can store data on the cloud easily and cheaply. But many software tools that help put databases on the cloud leave the data exposed by default. Even when the tools do make data private from the start, not every organization has the expertise to know it should leave those protections in place. Often, the data just sits there in plain text waiting to be read. That means there’ll always be something for people like Paine to find. In April, researchers in Israel found demographic details on more than 80 million US households, 솔레어카지노 including addresses, ages and income level.

No one knows how big the problem is, says Troy Hunt, a cybersecurity expert who’s chronicled on his blog the issue of exposed databases. There are far more unsecured databases than those publicized by researchers, he says, but you can only count the ones you can see. What’s more, new databases are constantly added to the cloud.

“It’s one of those tip-of-the-iceberg situations,” Hunt said.

Now playing: Watch this: 바카라사이트 A database with info on 80M+ US households was left open… 1:48 To search out databases, you have to have a high tolerance for boredom and a higher one for disappointment. Paine said it would take hours to find out whether the hotel room service database was actually a cache of exposed sensitive data. Poring over databases can be mind-numbing and tends to be full of false leads. It isn’t like searching for a needle in a haystack; it’s like searching fields of haystacks hoping one might contain a needle. What’s more, there’s no guarantee the hunters will be able to prompt the owners of an exposed database to fix the problem. Sometimes, the owner will threaten legal action instead.

Database jackpot
Your login credentials could be in the cloud for anyone to grab.

CNET The payoff, however, can be a thrill. Bob Diachenko, who hunts databases from his office in Ukraine, used to work in public relations for a company called Kromtech, which learned from a security researcher that it had a data breach. The experience intrigued Diachenko, and with no experience he dove into hunting databases. In July, 샌즈카지노 he found records on thousands of US voters in an unsecured database, simply by using the keyword “voter.”

“If me, a guy with no technical background, can find this data,” Diachenko said, “then anybody in the world can find this data.”

In January, Diachenko found 24 million financial documents related to US mortgages and banking on an exposed database. The publicity generated by the find, as well as others, helps Diachenko promote SecurityDiscovery.com, a cybersecurity consulting business he set up after leaving his previous job.

Publicizing a problem
Chris Vickery, a director of cyberrisk research at UpGuard, says big finds raise awareness and help drum up business from companies anxious to make sure their names aren’t associated with sloppy practices. Even if the companies don’t choose UpGuard, he said, the public nature of discoveries helps his field grow.

Earlier this year, Vickery looked for something big by searching on “data lake,” a term for large compilations of data stored in multiple file formats.

Your data found exposed

Cloud database removed after exposing details on 80 million US households

Millions of Facebook records were exposed on public Amazon server

Patient names, treatments leak among millions of rehab records
The search helped his team make one of the biggest finds to date, a cache of 540 million Facebook records that included user’s names, Facebook ID numbers and about 22,000 unencrypted passwords stored in the cloud. The data had been stored by third-party companies, not Facebook itself.

“I was swinging for the fences,” Vickery said, describing the process.

Getting it secured
Facebook said it acted swiftly to get the data removed. But not all companies are responsive.

When database hunters can’t get a company to react, they sometimes turn to a security writer who uses the pen name Dissent. She used to hunt unsecured databases herself but now spends her time prompting companies to respond to data exposures that other researchers find.

“An optimal response is, ‘Thank you for letting us know. We’re securing it and we’re notifying patients or customers and the relevant regulators,'” said Dissent, who asked to be identified by her pen name to protect her privacy.

Not every company understands what it means for data to be exposed, something Dissent has documented on her website Databreaches.net. In 2017, Diachenko sought her help in reporting exposed health records from a financial software vendor to a New York City hospital.

It’s a little bit like a drug. Justin Paine The hospital described the exposure as a hack, even though Diachenko had simply found the data online and didn’t break any passwords or encryption to see it. Dissent wrote a blog post explaining that a hospital contractor had left the data unsecured. The hospital hired an external IT company to investigate.

Tools for good or bad
The search tools that database hunters use are powerful.

Sitting in the pub, Paine shows me one of his techniques, which has let him find exposed data on Amazon Web Services databases and which he said was “hacked together with various different tools.” The makeshift approach is necessary because data stored on Amazon’s cloud service isn’t indexed on Shodan.

First, he opens a tool called Bucket Stream, which searches through public logs of the security certificates that websites need to access encryption technology. The logs let Paine find the names of new “buckets,” or containers for data, stored by Amazon, and check whether they’re publicly viewable.

Then he uses a separate tool to create a searchable database of his findings.

For someone who searches for caches of personal data down between the couch cushions of the internet, Paine doesn’t display glee or dismay as he examines the results. This is just the reality of the internet. It’s filled with databases that should be locked behind a password and encrypted but aren’t.

Ideally, companies would hire experts to do the work he does, he says. Companies, he says, should “make sure your data isn’t leaking.”

If that happened more often, Paine would have to find a new hobby. But that might be hard for him.

“It’s a little bit like a drug,” he said, before finally getting around to digging into his fries and chicken.

Traveling Around – Pretty Nice Trip To UP Casino

id=”mod_47933876″>As part of a trip to a conference in Marquette, MI, we decided to take a couple extra days and spend some time at Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste Marie, MI. The conference started on a Thursday so we left home in central Michigan late morning on Tuesday. After crossing the bridge at Mackinac City, we stopped at a McDonald’s for a midday snack. Headed further north and got into Sault Ste Marie about 2:30.

We checked into the hotel with no problem. Room was nice. Television had some funny kind of remote that took some getting used to but the wife figured it out and watched some HGTV while I snoozed.

Kewadin Hotel / Casino, Sault Ste. Marie, MI | Source Down to the casino for some fun before dinner. Found a multi player blackjack machine and settled in. They continue to make refinements to the software and on this one you must react in approximately 10 seconds or 파라오카지노 the machine decides you want to “hold” and goes on to the next player. A little disconcerting but I adjusted.

Wound up a two hour session from betting the minimum $3 some $50 ahead and the wife came and got me for dinner.

We’d always had good experiences at Dream Catchers Restaurant. This time for some reason, it wasn’t good. An inexperienced waitress took our orders and when the food was delivered we didn’t get exactly what we had ordered. It was explained that although we ordered rice with our meal, we wound up with a baked potato because they didn’t have any rice. The food was not hot enough to enjoy. We ate a dab of the stuff and called it quits. Won’t try that place again.

Back to the casino for a couple hours before and evening of television. Decided to invest my winnings in video poker. The game wasn’t the best but returned 98.3% due to a reduction in full house from 9 to 8. I succeeded in breaking even for the two hour session, helped along with the following.

Kewadin Casino / Hotel Sault Ste Marie, MI | Source Up and at ‘em on Wednesday. Had a cinnamon roll and an English Muffin at the snack bar. They were good (how can you screw those up?). Out on the town in the late morning.

Perhaps our favorite shopping in that area is a store called “A Quarter To Five”. For 파라오카지노 those unfamiliar with the store it looks like a room full of wheeled laundry baskets like those you’d find in a hotel. Overnight every Friday the baskets are emptied and filled with miscellany. When the store opens on Saturday, everything in the store is priced at $5. Each day the blanket price is reduced until on Friday, anything in the store is priced at 25 cents. Then it starts all over again. On Wednesday when we were there, the price had fallen to $1.00. There are signs that indicate they have had major problems at opening time on Saturday due to some of the extreme bargains to be found and have implemented a numbering scheme so that you get a number, get your place in line, and wait to get in. Even on Wednesday, it is a fascinating store. I accumulated a bag of books (sold by a bag containing whatever you can cram in rather than individually) and the wife found an indoor 바카라사이트 television antenna she wanted to try. Big purchases but it looked like every one of the shoppers was departing with something.

I had done some online research when our meal at the casino restaurant didn’t turn out very good and located what sounded like fun. It was in the neighborhood of the outlet store and had good reviews. “Pure Country Family Restaurant” didn’t disappoint. The food was excellent and inexpensive. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly, ate too much, and still took some back to the hotel for a later snack.

I decided to play for a couple hours, take a break, and play for a couple more. As I grow older I find that sitting at the machine for too long, I begin to lose concentration and it becomes counter productive. Two hours is about my limit.

My first two hour session brought me several 4 of a kind and I finished a few dollars ahead.

Kewadin Casino / Hotel, Sault Ste Marie, MI | Source Kewadin Casino / Hotel, Sault Ste Marie, MI | Source I didn’t get pictures of all of the 4’s and the one of 4 threes didn’t turn out very good but included it anyway. Even though the picture was bad, I got my 125 coin payoff.

We watched Jeopardy on television and I decided it was time for a last session of video poker for the trip. Found the machine I’d been playing and about 45 minutes into the session, got this:

Kewadin Casino / Hotel, Sault Ste Marie, MI | Source I realized I wasn’t likely to improve my results, so I took my $1,000 and called it quits.

An Added Stop
The conference on Thursday began with a cookout at the local park so we had a full day to travel the 100 plus miles from Sault Ste. Marie to Marquette. Along the way is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore at Munising. I’d reserved tickets for a cruise through Lake Superior. The cruise offered views and a narration talking about the formations, their origin, and their future. It was two hours well spent and we enjoyed it.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Munising, MI | SourcePictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Munising, MI | SourcePictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Munising, MI | Source Because of the size of the sandstone cliffs, the pictures are a little deceptive. They are huge natural structures. Some of them are well over 200 feet. The waterfall is some 70 feet.

We got checked in at the Quality Inn in Marquette. The cookout at a local park was a good social time. Friday morning was spent in business meetings and Friday afternoon consisted of some 5 seminars associated with being a Michigan State Employee Retiree.

Up on Saturday and got on the road. 6 1/2 hours later arrived at the old homestead – pretty tired and bedraggled. After recovery I started feeling good about the video poker and figure we may have another trip to Sault Ste. Marie before the snow flies.

Best live TV streaming services for cord-cutters in 2020

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> If you want to cut the cable TV cord but still want to keep live TV, the future is in streaming. Live TV streaming services like YouTube TV and Sling TV let you watch most, if not all of your favorite TV channels — from ABC to NBC to ESPN to CNN to Nickelodeon to Fox News — streamed live over the internet. And they probably cost far less than you’re paying the cable company for TV.

Prices start at $15 a month with no extra fees or contracts. In place of a cable box and the monthly fee to rent it, you’ll use an app on your smart TV, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV or game console. And you can watch at home or on the go via a tablet, phone, other mobile device or 코인카지노주소 even a web browser.

Now playing: Watch this: Live TV streaming services for cord cutters: How to choose… 2:44 These services have plenty of benefits — no more cable fees, no more contracts, yay! — but the savings can be outweighed by other downsides including internet fees, DVR restrictions, buffering and a lack of things to watch, including live sports. And just like cable TV, the cost of these services just keeps going up. AT&T raised the price of its AT&T TV Now service packages, Hulu with Live TV increased by $10 last December, while Sling raised its price by $5 across the board. The landscape is in constant flux, and this can also mean competition is squeezed out — PlayStation Vue was among our top picks for premium options, but Sony shuttered its streaming service in January.

Meanwhile, plenty of heavy hitters have entered the on-demand fray recently, including Apple with Apple TV Plus and Disney with Disney Plus, both of which debuted in late 2019. In 2020 streamers will have even more choices including NBC/Comcast’s Peacock, AT&T’s HBO Max and mobile-only upstart Quibi. All of these services lack live TV — focusing instead on back catalogs and new originals — but they can still eat into your entertainment budget.

With all that in mind, here’s a guide to the brave new world of live TV streaming over the internet, as well as other cord-cutting options available today, starting with our favorite recommendations for the best TV streaming service.

Best overall
YouTube TV
Sarah Tew/CNET YouTube TV has more top channels for the base price than any competitor, including all four local channels (ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC; note that CBS is the parent company of CNET) in most areas of the country. It’s also the only service with local PBS channels. YouTube TV has the best cloud DVR of the bunch, including unlimited storage and a generous nine months to watch recordings (most are 30 days). The interface is no-nonsense, if a little drab, and yet it offers most of the features a cable service can give you. And unlike Sling and others, it’s dead simple: One package, one price, done.

With its best-in-class channel selection and cloud DVR, YouTube TV is our favorite option for cord-cutters who want the perks of cable without the hassle. Like all premium-priced ($50-ish) services, however, its relatively high monthly fee makes it more difficult to save money over a traditional cable subscription.

Top channels not available: A&E, Comedy Central, History, Lifetime, NFL Network, Nickelodeon. Read our YouTube TV review.

Best budget service
Sling TV
Sarah Tew/CNET Sling TV costs more than AT&T Watch TV ($15) and Philo ($20) but has better channels, more options and a better interface, so it’s worth the extra money in our opinion. And it’s still dirt-cheap compared to the other streaming services, let alone cable.

Sling is cheaper than premium services like YouTube TV and Hulu with Live TV because it has very few local stations. Confusingly, it also has two $30-per-month channel packages, Sling Orange and Sling Blue. While some channels are available on both Sling Orange and Sling Blue, the two differ significantly with other channel offerings: Orange is basically the ESPN/Disney package, while Blue is the Fox/NBC package.

Sling’s interface isn’t much to look at, but it offers all of the options you need without cluttering the screen. The only real letdown, apart from the general lack of locals, is its arcane live pause. The service’s options are myriad, so check out Sling TV: Everything you need to know for all the details.

Top channels not available on Sling Blue: ABC, CBS, Animal Planet, Disney Channel, ESPN, Nickelodeon. Fox and NBC only available in select major cities.

Top channels not available on Sling Orange: ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Animal Planet, Bravo, CNBC, Discovery Channel, Bravo, Fox News, Fox Sports 1, FX, MSNBC, USA Network. Read our Sling TV review.

$30 at Sling TV Read more: YouTube TV vs. Sling TV: Which live TV streaming service is best for you?

Best ultracheap alternative
AT&T Watch TV
Sarah Tew/CNET Why is Watch TV so cheap? It lacks locals, much like Sling TV, doesn’t have any dedicated sports channels and, with the exception of CNN, is missing news channels, too. And many of the shows on the channels it does have can be watched on-demand with a Hulu subscription for less.

On the other hand, it’s solid for the price. Its lineup includes 30 channels, some of which — like AMC, HGTV, and BBC America — are no longer available on the more expensive AT&T TV Now. The interface is fun and easy to navigate. It’s available on most other major streaming platforms, except for Roku, and some AT&T wireless plan customers get it for free.

Top channels not available: ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Bravo, CNBC, Disney Channel, ESPN, Fox News, Fox Sports 1, FX, MLB Network, MSNBC, NFL Network, Travel Channel, USA Network. Read our AT&T Watch TV review.

$15 at AT&T Best for Hulu subscribers
Hulu With Live TV
Sarah Tew/CNET With the least cable-like interface of its competitors, Hulu’s greatest asset is the integration of live TV with its significant catalog of on-demand content for one price. Unfortunately, the interface frustrations apparent with the standard service are amplified once you add live TV. Another issue is that you’ll have to pay another $10 a month to get the ability to skip commercials on Hulu’s cloud DVR (the base cloud DVR, which is included, doesn’t permit skipping ads). Its channel count is solid, however, and with Hulu’s catalog included (Handmaid’s Tale, anyone?) it’s a top competitor, but its higher price puts it out of the running for now.

Top channels not available: AMC, BBC America, Comedy Central, MLB Network, MTV, NBA TV, NFL Network, NFL Red Zone, Nickelodeon. Read our Hulu with Live TV review.

$55 at Hulu Read: 20 Google Chromecast tips and tricks

Best live TV plus HBO combo
AT&T TV Now
Sarah Tew/CNET Formerly known as DirecTV Now, AT&T TV Now has one major extra the other premium services lack: it has HBO included in the price. Whether or not you care about HBO (or Game of Thrones), it’s still not a good deal. It’s now the most expensive service, starting at a base of $65, and it’s missing more top channels than any competitor (although you can pay extra to get most of those channels if you want). Its DVR is also a step behind those of our top choices. The traditional-style interface is good, however, as it includes the flipper-friendly ability to swipe left and right to change channels.

Top channels not available in base package: A&E, AMC, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, HGTV, History, Lifetime, MLB Network, NFL Network, Travel Channel. Read our AT&T TV Now review.

$65 at AT&T Best for soccer fans
FuboTV $55
Ty Pendlebury/CNET There’s much to like about FuboTV — it offers a wide selection of channels second only to YouTube TV — and its sports focus makes it especially attractive to soccer fans in particular. Yet, it’s not suited for watching on a TV as none of the platforms work as well as the mobile version, and the lack of ABC and ESPN is disappointing.

Top channels not available in base package: ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN 2. Read our FuboTV review.

See at FuboTV How to shop for cord-cutting live TV services

Each of the services above offers a different mix of channels, so your first step should be choosing one that carries your “can’t miss” cable channels and shows. And some of the most important channels are locals, namely ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. Not every service offers all of them in every area.

The services can be broken down into two main groups: Budget, with prices starting at $15 but without local channels. And premium, with prices from $50 and up and include locals and often other extras like a superior cloud DVR. Yes, most of the services (barring AT&T Watch TV) allow you to record and play back shows, just like a traditional cable or satellite DVR, but they often come with restrictions.

Then there’s the multistream issue. If you want to watch more than one program at the same time — for example, on your living room TV and on a bedroom TV, or the main TV and a tablet or other devices — you’ll want to make sure the service you’re watching has enough simultaneous streams. Some of the least expensive services only allow one stream at a time, and if you try to watch a second, it’s blocked.

Keep in mind that, especially if you do have more than one person watching at once on supported devices, you need to make sure you have fast, reliable broadband internet. A 100Mbps download service will cost around $50 to $60 a month, and that’s where the savings of cutting cable can get swallowed up.

The cord-cutter’s guide to the best indoor antennas

Recap: Diary of a cable TV cord cutter
What streaming TV services won’t give you
Streaming TV services are great, but there are some things they can’t do compared to a traditional cable box.

First, it’s worth looking at the channels that you can’t get with any of these services. A big one was PBS, as the broadcaster reportedly hadn’t acquired the streaming rights to all of the shows that it airs. However, YouTube TV was the first to include PBS last year.

Another biggie is sports. Sure, most services carry ESPN and local channels for NFL football, but if you follow a professional baseball or basketball team, chances are you’ll need their specific channel — called an RSN, or regional sports network — to watch regular season games. RSN coverage varies widely for each service.

And fans of live sports beware: Every live TV service’s video streaming is a few seconds to a minute or more behind the “live” stream you’ll get from your local cable or satellite provider. That means you could get a preview of scores or big plays from Twitter, phone alerts or phone calls from friends slightly before you see the action on screen.

Read more: NFL streaming: Best ways to watch football live without cable

While AT&T TV Now offers HBO as part of its base subscription, most other services either sell it as an add-on or require you to sign up separately for HBO Now. In addition, NFL Red Zone and NHL Network are either not available or only as part of a package.

If you’re used to 5.1-channel surround offered by cable or even OTA, then you’ll probably be disappointed that all of the services only include stereo sound on live broadcasts. AT&T TV Now does include 5.1 audio on some on-demand material, though.

(Note that CNET is owned by ViacomCBS, which is a compensated programming provider on all cable, satellite and online TV services that offer CBS channels, which include Showtime, Pop, CBS Sports and The CW, among others. CBS also owns and operates its own online service, CBS All Access, which is mentioned below.)

Other options
Philo

Price: Starts at $20 a month

Another cheap service with no sports or local channels, Philo offers bread-and-butter cable channels like AMC, Comedy Channel, Nickelodeon and BBC America. Unlike Watch AT&T, it includes a cloud DVR, but it lacks a big-name 24-hour news channel like CNN.

Price: Starts at $5.99 a month

CBS All Access stands out from all of the other services as it offers live (in some cities) and on-demand from just one channel. In addition to broadcast video-on-demand, it offers exclusive online content such as Star Trek: Discovery. The on-demand stuff has ads, but you can get an ad-free option for $10 a month.

Netflix: One of the first streaming TV services and it’s so popular that it’s become a catch-all term in the same way as “Magic Marker” or “Coke” in the South. High-definition plans start at $13 a month, and the service covers thousands of TV shows and movies, including original content like Daredevil and Orange Is the New Black.

The interface isn’t as user-friendly as Netflix, but the service also offers shows not on its rival, including original content like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Amazon Prime also has the ability to add premium channels (HBO and Showtime and more), making it a potential one-stop shop.

See it at VuduIt’s also worth investigating free, ad-supported services such as Roku Channel, IMDB Freedive, TuBi TV, Pluto and Sony Crackle, which offer a wealth of content.

Sarah Tew/CNET Is an indoor or outdoor antenna a viable option?
If you have a TV in your house — that is, a screen that incorporates a tuner — you’re part-way to cutting the cord already. An affordable indoor antenna hooked up to your set-top box will let you watch free TV over the air from any channel you receive in your local broadcast area. Antennas cost as little as $10. See our comparison of indoor antennas here.

You can also add a DVR such as the Amazon Fire TV Recast or TiVo Bolt OTA if you want. Then you can record those live TV antenna channels, play them back and skip commercials, just like on a standard cable TV DVR. Here’s CNET’s roundup of the best OTA DVRs for cord-cutters.

A solid, lower-cost alternative to live TV streaming services is the combination of an antenna for live local channels and an on-demand service such as Netflix or Hulu (which is now only $5.99 a month). That way you’ll still be able to watch live programming and also have a choice of on-demand content.

Amazon’s Fire TV Recast DVR is a cord-cutting antenna user’s friend.

Sarah Tew/CNET Conclusion: Try it yourself
Streaming live TV services are still in flux. Since launch, every service has increased its prices by at least $5 a month, channel selections and cities with local channel access are changing all the time, and reports persist about some services losing money, or even closing in the case of PlayStation Vue. While streaming is undoubtedly the future, it will be some time before both prices and the services offered settle in.

That said, if you want a cable-like experience both at home and for on-the-go devices, without the dead weight that a cable subscription brings, then a streaming service is worth a look. There’s no contract to sign, and if you don’t like the service you’re on, you can easily switch. So whether you’re looking for a basic package such as Sling TV or want to pay more for a deluxe experience from the likes of YouTube TV, there should be a streaming TV service to suit you.

Streaming wars spill into CES 2020 as media nabs the spotlight

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> CES officially kicks off Tuesday.

Getty Images This story is part of CES 2020, our complete coverage of the showroom floor and the hottest new tech gadgets around. Every year, CES draws the tech-obsessed to gawk at fancy televisions and off-the-wall gadgets. This year, though, the conference’s long-running media sideshow is flooding onto the main stage, including two keynotes by companies vying to shape the future of TV.

Media companies and marketers long have fueled a show-behind-the-show at CES, one that has little to do with the next hot doodad. The mobs of media folks in Las Vegas may never even make it over to any of the big show floors. Instead, they’re squirreled away in hotel suite meetings or mingling at panels and parties around the Aria Resort & Casino, the epicenter of CES’ media confab sometimes referred to as Tech South.

Meanwhile, companies seem to be rushing toward a convergence of tech and media.

On one hand, tech giants are pouring resources into becoming media heavyweights. That goes for stalwarts like Netflix, estimated to have unleashed a $15 billion budget for programming last year, as well as relative newcomers to video like Apple, which launched its Apple TV Plus in November on the back of a reported $6 billion budget to rope in some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. And AT&T’s $85 billion takeover of HBO-owner Time Warner — now WarnerMedia — finally made it into the clear last year.

On the other hand, traditional media players are arming themselves with tech firepower like never before. Disney launched its Netflix competitor, Disney Plus, in November, a culmination of its $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox last year and of years spent reorienting the entire company around the service. And Comcast’s NBCUniversal is waiting in the wings to follow suit with its own streaming service, called Peacock, early this year.

CES 2017 brought the unveiling of Hulu’s live-television streaming subscription, and 2016 was marked by Netflix’s keynote reveal that it launched worldwide except in China. What does CES 2020 have in store? Here’s a peek at the media presence in Vegas this year.

Streaming wars at CES
The streaming wars are pitting a raft of new streaming services against each other, and they’re all launching within about seven months of each other. The outcomes of these skirmishes will shape the future of television — and affect how much you pay to watch your favorite shows and movies. Apple and Disney were first to enter the fray in November, and 카지노사이트 three more companies are launching their competitors, backed by billions of dollars in investment, in the first few months of 2020.

And all three of them are presenting at CES this year.

The first is probably one most people have never heard of: Quibi, which has even morphed its Twitter name to “WTFisQuibi” in recent weeks. Backed by every major Hollywood studio, Quibi is being touted as a star-studded mobile subscription service for short-form video — “quick bites,” or quibis, as the company has dubbed them.

Quibi boasts an eye-popping slate of talent. Among traditional Hollywood stars, Quibi has lined up Dwayne Johnson, Chrissy Teigen, Kevin Hart, Jennifer Lopez, Idris Elba, Zac Efron, Tina Fey and husband-and-wife combo Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner (but on different shows) — as well as a dizzying number of others. Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, Guillermo del Toro and Ridley Scott are all contributing series. Plus, Quibi has recruited popular online celebs like Liza Koshy, Shan Boodram and Rachel Hollis.

Now playing: Watch this: CES 2020 preview: Surprise booths, slim screens and smart… 2:56 The company has stayed mum about the talent it’ll be bringing to the CES stage. But Quibi’s CES keynote is shaping up to be the service’s big public unveiling ahead of its April 6 launch, so your safest bet in Vegas next week will probably be that Quibi tries to blow away the trade show with celebrity wattage.

So far, Quibi has said the service will cost $8 a month for ad-free memberships or $5 for monthly subscriptions that also run ads. The keynote will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. PT in the Park Theater, led by Quibi founder and Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg and Quibi CEO Meg Whitman, the former chief of eBay and Hewlett-Packard.

Katzenberg hasn’t been shy about Quibi’s ambition, saying the service should become as definitive for short video as Google is to search. “Five years from now … if we got this right, there will have been the era of movies, the era of television and the era of Quibi,” he said at SXSW in March.

The second combatant in the streaming wars to take the main CES stage is Comcast’s NBCUniversal, which will also launch Peacock in April. Peacock will be leaning into its back catalog of shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation. It hopes to make a reboot of The Office, as well as planned revivals of Battlestar Galactica by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, Punky Brewster and Saved by the Bell.

But we don’t know nearly as many details about Peacock yet. The service will have a paid subscription and another tier supported by advertising, but it hasn’t specified price yet. We know some of the programming slated for Peacock, but not nearly all. One odd thing about NBCUniversal’s CES keynote: It comes a week before the company will hold a large private event unveiling Peacock in detail.

NBCU’s keynote will also be Wednesday at the Park Theater, but at 4 p.m. PT. Officially titled “If TV Was Invented Today: NBCUniversal Reimagines the Future of Entertainment,” it will be led by the company’s head of advertising and partnerships, Linda Yaccarino, and 샌즈카지노주소 it will include talent like Mandy Moore, star of NBC’s This is Us, and Terry Crews, host of America’s Got Talent.

Finally, AT&T’s HBO Max will unleash in May with Friends, Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones and Watchmen plus its own lineup of originals. Though AT&T’s WarnerMedia — the division behind HBO Max — isn’t presenting a keynote, it will make a presentation at the media-focused conference in the Aria on Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. PT. The tech chief of WarnerMedia, Jeremy Legg, and Andy Forssell, the group’s head of direct-to-consumer business (that is, streaming) are set to describe their experiences building a streaming video platform.

Media mavens should also keep their eyes on:

The music front
Streaming music will have a presence at CES this year, too.

Zane Lowe is the creative director of Apple Music.

Getty Images Most notably, Apple is making a rare appearance at CES. While an Apple executive appearing on a CES privacy roundtable has generated a lot of attention, 카지노사이트 far less notice has been paid to another Apple figure speaking at CES this year. The creative director of Apple Music, Zane Lowe, will participate in a talk Tuesday at 1:15 pm ET at the Aria.

Apple Music launched years after the latest wave of streaming music services already had the momentum to make streaming the main way people listen to music worldwide. But Apple Music quickly became the world’s second most popular music service by subscribers behind only Spotify.

Speaking of the global leader, the company doesn’t have an official presentation at CES. But it will host a happy hour with a panel discussion about the future of podcasts. Spotify has said to expect a news announcement at the event, which will be Tuesday evening ahead of the company’s annual CES party.

And Amazon Music will be trotting out Alicia Keys alongside the service’s head of label relations, Andre Stapleton, and a Grammy-winning mastering and mixing engineer, Emily Lazar. They’re all collected to talk about “the importance of delivering music the ways artists recorded it.” Amazon Music’s panel will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT at the Aria.

Not at all coincidently, Amazon launched Amazon Music HD service in September. So another safe bet: Count on lots of cheerleading for 카지노사이트 that $13-a-month subscription.

How big gambling companies 'groom' their high roller clients

Every month, for more than a year, the sum of at least £5,000 was deposited into the bank account of hairdresser Ericka Carroll.

The money didn’t come from her business, 메리트카지노 though.

She would have had to ‘cut and blow dry’ an awful lot of hair at her small salon at the bottom of her garden at home in Hertfordshire to generate that kind of sustained income.

Ericka Carroll, pictured right, received some £100,000 from Paddy Power

A court case suggests Mrs Carroll was working as a VIP influencer on behalf of Paddy Power

A court case suggests Mrs Carroll was working as a VIP influencer on behalf of Paddy Power

The amount she received, after all, was never less than £5,000 and sometimes it was substantially more.

In all, Mrs Carroll, 53, is believed to have received a total of nearly £100,000.

The windfall, we now know, came from Paddy Power, one of Britain’s biggest gambling companies.

You might think that Mrs Carroll must have won the money playing, say, online bingo or placing a string of successful bets on any number of events at her local bookies.

She didn’t.

There is a much shabbier explanation — one that certainly tells us something about Mrs Carroll, and her husband Tony Carroll, 49, but even more about the rapacious and morally bankrupt tactics of the gambling industry; tactics which are commonplace in this world but have remained, until now, largely a dirty trade secret.

Mrs Carroll was hired, at least on paper, to be what is known as a ‘VIP introducer’ to encourage high rollers to bet with the firm.

She was picked only because her husband was barred from working with Paddy Power as he had only recently left his job with rival bookmaker Ladbrokes, who it is believed had forbidden him from working for a competitor for a period of time, it is claimed in court documents.

So, even though his wife’s name was on the Paddy Power contract, it was Mr Carroll who was in fact the ‘VIP introducer.’

One of the people he persuaded, or rather poached, was Tony Parente, a former property investor, who had been one of his clients at Ladbrokes.

Tony Parente, 41, was also a gambling addict.

Tony Parente, pictured, was given a £20,000 sign-on bonus to start gambling with Paddy Power and was offered tickets to see his favourite football team on European away games

Tony Parente, pictured, was given a £20,000 sign-on bonus to start gambling with Paddy Power and was offered tickets to see his favourite football team on European away games

Nevertheless, he was given a £20,000 sign-on bonus to ‘induce him to gamble’ with Paddy Power, instead of Ladbrokes, and was rewarded — ‘groomed’ is the word many would use — with free tickets to watch Arsenal, the team he supported, play Barcelona and Bayern Munich away.

Mr Carroll often accompanied him on those foreign jaunts.

Anyone who saw them sitting together at the Nou Camp in Barcelona or the Allianz Arena in Germany or mingling in the hospitality box at Cheltenham, where the champagne flowed, would have assumed they were good mates.

But it would be hard to think of a more unhealthy relationship.

Under the introducer agreement, Mrs Carroll was entitled to 25 per cent of Tony Parente’s losses but was guaranteed an ‘upfront monthly retainer of £5,000′ if 25 per cent of whatever he lost was less than £5,000.

It must have been the easiest money the Carrolls have ever made.

In his first month with Paddy Power, Parente lost £49,700, which meant £12,425 would have been paid into Mrs Carroll’s account; in the second he lost £103,211, which meant she was entitled to £25,802 .

. . in the space of little over a year, between September 2015 and by October 2016, Parente’s gambling losses totalled £367,970.

And a quarter of £367,970 equals £91,992.

‘I know there must have potentially been some benefit to him [Carroll], of course,’ Parente told us.
‘But I was a compulsive gambler. As long as I got my free chips, that I got my £20,000 bonus, that my bets were being put on, I didn’t mind. I didn’t care. I was deep in addiction. When I found out just how much he [Carroll] was getting I was shocked. It made me sick.’

Did Mr Carroll introduce anyone else to Paddy Power?

‘I knew there was someone else, a very, very wealthy guy,’ Parente says.

‘I have no doubt there would have been others. Why wouldn’t there have been?

‘He had about a dozen VIP clients like me under his watch at Ladbrokes,’ Parente explains in reference to the perverse practice whereby gambling firms refer to those who lose the most money as VIPs.
‘I suspect Tony Carroll also approached them to come over to Paddy Power when he left.’

The revelations are an embarrassment for former deputy Labour leader Tom Watson, one of the gambling industry’s most vocal critics when he was an MP.

‘Dirty and money grabbing,’ is how he once described Paddy Power before becoming a paid adviser with Flutter, which owns Paddy Power, Betfair and Skybet, last month.

Paddy Power is not believed to be the only gambling brand to hire ‘introducers’.

The contract with Ericka Carroll is the first of its kind to be made public and followed an application to the High Court by this newspaper, which has been campaigning for tighter gambling regulations.

It emerged as part of a case in which Parente’s former business partner claims Paddy Power failed to carry out sufficient checks to stop Parente betting money that he had stolen from the business partner.

Paddy Power insists it did and is defending the claim.

But the Gambling Commission has already handed out a record £27 million in fines to UK betting firms this year for failing to protect problem gamblers, like Antonio Parente, among other misdemeanours.

It’s a shameful indictment, considering more than two million people in the UK either fall into that category or are at risk of addiction, which results in about one suicide every day, says a recent House of Lords review.

To the gambling industry, which is worth more than £14 billion a year, this demographic is a source of ever more profit.

Paddy Power took a fifth of its revenues last year from just 0.6 per cent of customers — the heaviest losers, who are ruthlessly targeted, and called VIPs.

Still, the Gambling Commission refuses to ban ‘grooming tactics’ such as enticing punters with cash bonuses, holidays and exclusive tickets to sports matches.

In Parente’s case — and there are many other examples — he was, by his own admission, committing fraud to finance his habit but has not faced criminal proceedings because his one-time associate (Amarjeet Singh Dhir) did not press charges against him.

In other words, Mr Dhir holds Paddy Power ultimately responsible for what happened, not Parente, who will be a witness in the civil action which will be closely watched by Britain’s biggest gambling operators; they fear that if Paddy Power is ordered to pay up, a wave of other similar claims will ensue.

Tony Carroll knew Parente was a problem gambler all along, it is alleged, and so by implication Paddy Power — who recruited Mr Carroll as a ‘VIP introducer’ — must have known too, something it denies.

The incriminating evidence, court papers allege, is contained in an email Parente sent to Ladbrokes spelling out his predicament and his reasons for closing his account with the firm.

Mr Carroll, the papers say, was aware of this when he recruited him to Paddy Power — because he ‘saw and/or assisted’ in drafting this email.

It was forwarded to Parente, according to the thread, from ‘anthony[carroll] @ ****** * *’ at 3.03pm on January 6, 2016.
The Mail has a copy of the email. It begins: ‘I would like to self-exclude my account with immediate effect to stop me causing any more irreparable damage to myself, my family and my business. I have been troubled for some time and trying to cope with what I know is a serious problem .

. . I have been guilty of using my company funds and abusing the trust of investors by gambling their funds . . . I am now facing up to my actions and my illness.’

But Parente didn’t stop playing the odds. Instead, he continued his destructive relationship with Mr Carroll and carried on gambling with Paddy Power on horses, greyhounds and football amongst other things.

‘He was a bubbly character, he was a good laugh,’ Parente said.

‘We both supported Arsenal. We went to matches. He phoned me. He visited my home.’

By the time his 13-month association with Mr Carroll finally ended, however, Parente had lost everything: his home in Hertfordshire, his business, and his wife, the mother of one of his two children, who left him.

Tony Carroll, on the other hand, enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle in the Home Counties and was part of a syndicate which owned a racehorse with prize money earnings of more than £130,000 at the time.

On Facebook, he can be seen enjoying a meal with his wife at Wincanton racecourse, where his horse was running that day.

He is now a director of several companies, including Carroll Enterprises, incorporated in January last year, which specialises in the ‘letting or operating of own or leased real estate’.

Mr Carroll worked for Ladbrokes for almost 16 years and was head of sportsbook trading (from 2009-2015) in charge of a team responsible for premier customers — such as Parente — before becoming a ‘VIP Introducer’ with Paddy Power.

‘I don’t want to talk to you,’ Mr Carroll said as he arrived home with his wife in their Mercedes hatchback this week before disappearing inside and slamming the door.

Brian Chappell, who founded the consumer group Justice For Punters, knows Tony Parente.

‘It is probably one of the worst cases of its kind we have seen,’ he said.

‘I have no objection to people gambling. I have no objection to gambling companies making money. But I do mind the vulnerable being exploited.’

Tony Parente is far from the only person to fall victim to so-called ‘introducers’, as the following account from a Londoner, 우리카지노계열 in his 30s, who was working for a hedge fund in Gibraltar recently, illustrates.

He was a regular at a casino, gambling £10,000-a-night at the blackjack and roulette tables when he was approached by two ‘introducers’ from a major gambling company.

‘They could see I was spending most of my nights in the casino, gambling like crazy,’ he said.

‘They would buy me drinks and ask if I wanted food. At the time I thought they were just lovely people.’

Then, one night, one of the men asked him: ‘Who are you gambling with at the moment? Come over to us and we’ll look after you.’

He agreed to join their VIP scheme.
He was flown to London to watch the 2017 FA Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea and £2,000 was deposited in the account he opened with the company.

He said: ‘At the end of each week, they would give me 10 per cent of my losses back.’ The firm, he said, did not ask for any evidence of income — which it was required to do under gambling regulations — until almost £1 million had passed through his account and even then he was told this was just a formality ‘for box ticking compliance.’

Over the next two years, he lost £460,000; he resigned from his highly-paid job in Gibraltar and returned home to London where, he says, he tried to take his own life.

The company eventually agreed to pay him around half of his losses, to avoid damaging publicity, but only on condition he signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), or gagging clause, which are being increasingly used in the gambling sector.

In February, when he gave evidence to the House of Lords select committee on the social and economic impact of the gambling industry, Kenny Alexander, then chief executive of Ladbrokes Coral owner GVC , revealed the company had entered into 28 such NDAs with punters.

He also admitted: ‘I am not going to sugar-coat it — 99 per cent of the customers who play on our sites will lose.’

No one knows this more than Tony Parente.

‘If my former business partner had not filed his claim we would never have found out about the introducer agreement, and that is scary,’ said Parente, who says he has been ‘clean’ since closing his account with Paddy Power and now works for a group which helps gambling addicts.

Paddy Power has pledged to cancel all its personal introducer agreements within four weeks in the wake of the controversy.

The company said in court papers it could not comment on why hairdresser Mrs Carroll was named on the contract instead of Mr Carroll, saying the employees who drew it up have left.

When he accepted the position with Flutter, Tom Watson justified his decision by insisting he was taking on the role to ‘get under the bonnet of the business’.

There would be no better place to start with than the ‘grooming’ of so-called VIPs like Tony Parente.
